Great !! | ||||||
| This is the second book I read by Robards (the first being Scandalous). I must say 'Loving Julia' is exactly what this book is about - loving Julia, the woman underneath, the lady she has become, the person she will always be - the spirited Jewel Combs. I truly enjoy her antics, her Cockney accent, her thoughts. She is funny, fun, and loving, and abhors pretentiousness, and speaks her mind. I love the ending, although I would've preferred for Chloe to call her "Mummy", instead of merely "Julia". Great book, I couldn't put it down. | ||||||
Best book I've ever read
| This was the best book I have read in a long time. Karen Robards has out done herself. I couldn't put it down. | ||||||
A mish-mosh of classic plots
| It's certainly a cut above the rest when it comes to romance novel story lines, but I felt that the major components of the plot were "borrowed" from literature classics. For example, taking a cockney guttersnipe and turning her into a dignified lady with a new identity (Pygmalion). Or the brooding master who keeps his daughter in the house in the country (Jane Eyre). There are even some traces of the Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca and Hitchcock's Vertigo what with the whole "he murdered his wife, she was pushed off the bell tower" plotline. But still, it is an engrossing novel (perhaps BECAUSE of the classic plotlines), although my favorite Karen Robards will always be Dark Torment for it's delicious characters, high level of emotion, and unique plot and setting. | ||||||
